The Uncomfortable Space of What's Next
Change doesn't always announce itself. Sometimes, it happens so quietly that you barely notice it. You go about your days, doing what needs to be done, making decisions, taking steps forward. Nothing seems particularly different until one day, you look around and realize something has shifted.
Your life isn't quite what it used to be. You're no longer where you were, but you're not entirely sure where you're going either. You're somewhere in the middle.
I call this the space of what's next.
It's an uncomfortable place to be. You've made progress, perhaps even accomplished what you set out to do, yet uncertainty has a way of making you question whether you're moving in the right direction. Suddenly, the familiar starts looking appealing. The places and circumstances you worked so hard to move beyond begin calling you back. Not necessarily because they were better, but because they were comfortable. You knew what to expect, and there's something reassuring about that.
But familiarity doesn't always mean it's where you belong.
When the past calls you back, when comfort calls you back, it may be the very moment you need to keep moving forward. That doesn't mean ignoring your doubts or pretending to have all the answers. It means giving yourself permission to explore the unknown without immediately retreating to what you know.
Have questions? Ask them. Need information? Do the research. Seeking clarity is part of the process. The challenge is not allowing uncertainty to overshadow the progress you've already made.
Because the I don't know what's next swamp can be exhausting. It can drain your energy, cloud your thinking, and leave you standing still. That's why it's important to have something to hold on to. A plan, a routine, or even a few small commitments to yourself that keep you moving when motivation is nowhere to be found.
And while you're doing the work, remember that progress isn't always visible. Sometimes, it looks like nothing is happening, even when things are slowly falling into place.
Maybe the answer isn't to figure everything out today, but to keep learning, adjusting, and taking the next step.
And perhaps one day, just as quietly as things began to change, you'll look around and realize you've arrived somewhere you once only imagined.
Maybe you'll even touch the edge of heaven.
At least, your version of it.
Don't run back. Look forward.

A Moment for Reflection
Is there an area of your life where the comfort of what's familiar may be keeping you from exploring what's next?
